Hematology I

WELCOME LETTER TO STUDENTS

It is with great happiness I welcome the second year Medical Lab Science students to this introductory course to the science of blood “Hematology”.  As having just passed your first year, you are well acquainted with basic biology, chemistry and physics courses.  Such classes did not deal with specifics of the human body.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is an introductory course for the science of hematology.  The course is designed to provide the basic and essential information to proceed to “Hematology II” (the advanced course).  Hematology I not only introduces the students to the basic science of hematology, rather it covers all of the information essential in understanding the “normal” hematology.  That is, all the steps involved in the composition of normal blood (including all of its cellular components) found in “normal healthy” individuals.  The later part of the course explains in great detail the abnormal (pathological) situations leading to anemia occurrence.  In other words, the course at this stage, concentrates on Red Blood Cell (RBC) abnormalities leaving the White Blood Cell (WBC), and platelets abnormalities to Hematology II, where they are discussed in great detail.

Lectures are deigned to start by explaining the normal composition of all blood cells (Hematopoiesis, 6 lectures), followed by detailed explanation of RBC structure, function, and survival with the greatest emphasis paid towards hemoglobin (4 lectures).  Anemia is defined, classified and explained in great details in the remaining 17 lectures.  A very lengthy detailed overview of anemia covers; anemia of iron metabolism disorders including Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA), Megaloblastic Anemia & Pernicious Anemia, Thalassemias, Hemoglobinopathies, anemia due to blood loss, Hemolytic Anemia, and anemia due to bone marrow failure.
